"Smallwood’s writing is sensitive and honest with a deep understanding of the intricacies of the relationships between her characters ... [she] shares a gentle look into the intricacies of such perverted father son relations and the jealousy and compassion that can pervade them."

Producer/Director Allison Moody brings April Smallwood's American family drama "Russ Miles" to NYC for Manhattan Repertory Theatre's Summerfest 2012. The cast, which is led by the formidable Jeff Grafton and includes some of New York's most electric and visceral young talent, comes together for one weekend of heart stopping laughter and tears. It is truly an event you don't want to miss!
Director's Notes
I wanted to be a part of “Russ Miles” from the moment April had me read the play back in the fall of 2010. It struck a chord with me instantly, not only because of April’s simple yet heart-wrenching storytelling, but also because I can't get enough of family dramas. Whether it’s something as simple as a cell phone commercial showing a mother welcoming home her fatigue-clad son or family dinner in a three level house in Osage County, there is something about the relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, sisters and brothers that has always stirred something deep within me. I believe that stories about the American family are important. Whether it’s “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” or “Other Desert Cities”, plays about American families give the audience an opportunity to know themselves better, to recognize themselves and their family members in the characters. They allow the audience to have the cathartic experience of laughter, love, loss, and grief without having to face the actual trauma of confrontation themselves. Hopefully, on the other side of this event, an audience member will have some revelation about her own life, perhaps want to reconnect with a loved one, to change herself to be better for her loved ones or even, perhaps, comes to terms with and relinquish the hurt of the past. We hope you can join us and thank you so much for supporting live theatre!
